Using a Nifty-Fifty at an Event

My wife and I were invited to a birthday party for one of our close friends on Boxing Day.  As usual, I brought my camera along with me, just in case…

One of the things that I have noticed is that nobody likes a flash going off all the time.  It can be distracting.  I also have had situations where lighting was rather crappy and if I didn’t have a flash, i would not be able to get a decent shot.

So we have a bit of a trade-off:

go in with a zoom lens with a range of about f3.5-f5.6 or more and take my chances with flash;

or attach my trusty prime with f1.8 and see what we can do without flash.

I went with my nifty-fifty.  I still had to be very aware of lighting but it was much more flexible and forgiving.   Up the ISO a bit and we have some decent shots.  One thing that is very different when using a prime lens is that you need to actually move around for composing and framing more than with a  zoom.

I have a few shots from the event using my 50mm f1.8 with no flash:
